Instructor: Ed Khouri
Since 1980, Ed has worked extensively in diverse settings as a counselor, writer and trainer in recovery support and treatment services. Ed’s research into the neuroscience of Joy in Addiction Recovery resulted in his co-authoring the book, “Joy Starts Here” and co-creating research-based support group materials for the Connexus Program, including two acclaimed 12-week programs called “Restarting” and “Belonging”. Ed’s work provides the basis for the emphasis we place on relational Joy in the approach to Professional Recovery Coaching.
In addiction, activity shifts away from the prefrontal regions of the brain’s emotional/relational control center and increases in the subcortical areas associated with pleasure, reward and craving. In essence, the brain of an addicted person becomes non-relational, incapable of effectively regulating emotions, consumed with cravings and pre-occupied with reward.
Joyful connections with others are vital for lasting recovery, because joy grows resilience and mindfulness, shifts activity to prefrontal areas of the brain’s emotional and relational control center and helps establish a strong, stable identity. Joy in relationships provides the brain with what it seeks and needs the most.
In this course you will learn how addiction impairs the brain from developing healthy, joy-filled relational connections as well as techniques to use when working with clients to bring peace and restoration to relational circuitry.
